Hello Emile,
Apart from self-ignition and falling into pieces, you should not worry about
re-certification!
Now, seriously, a recertification is recommended at regulat intervals. If
you work for an ISO 9000 company, than there is no question, just recertify
when required.
However, a recertification is costly and in many cases will simply mean that
the same unit is returned as is, with a new certificate.
Look at the X-Rite web site for a list of accredited sites where you can
send it for recertification.
If you use your device a lot, then the lamp may be due for a change, and
this can be flagged in the certification process. If it sometimes fails
calibration, then the lamp may be going down, BUT FIRST CHECK THAT THE USB
CABLE IS NOT THE PROBLEM. I have found that the rather stiff USB cable that
comes/came with the unit has two effects:
1- It has low resistance and powers the unit reliably (a plus)
2- The cable stiffness somewhat stresses the i1 input connector and, after a
while, makes the connection less reliable (a minus)
Beware of low quality USB cable. Beware of long high quality USB cables,
even the "Gold ones" guaranteed for life! (just compare the light output of
the i1 with a long vs short cable, and you should very well see a
difference).
If you use your device now and then, and it is well cared of (not dropped
too often!), then it could wait longer than the "end-of-certification" date.
How long? Until you feel uneasy about the situation or the results you get
with the instrument!
I use a few white reference from a variety of sources that I measure
regularly with my i1 for consistent reading. You can also use the unit white
calibration tile; this tile should be kept clean, with blown air, and NOT
wiped as much as possible. Make a measurement of the tile and keep the
spectrum and L*a*b* values handy (Note: the i1 calibration tile is not a
perfect white but the i1 is programmed specifically for it). Re-checking the
tile after a calibration, without touching the i1, is a simple quality
control check (and also verifies that the i1 was properly seated in its tray
when being calibrated).

Subject: Spectrophotometer Calibration?
I am new to this forum, so I hope this question is on topic.
About 2 years ago I purchased an i1Photo Pro spectrophotometer kit for
monitor calibration and creating profiles.
Enclosed was a "certificate of performance" noting specs and performance
results. At the bottom it says "Next Calibration Due Date: April 2008"
Can someone tell me what this means? Does the spectrophotometer itself
need to be calibrated periodically? If so, where would I have this done?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,
-Emile
