Correlating Tappi Brightness

A colleague of mine working in the paper industry has asked if its possible
to correlate Tappi brightness to color data...for example correlating b* and
L* values to brightness values. My immediate thoughts were that it is not
possible, as Tappi brightness is not linear, and is measured from a single
wavelength. I¹ve also read that there is no mathematical correlation between
brightness and ³whiteness², but I thought I¹d post this to the list just the
same. So, assuming that the same instrument and illumination are used to
derive brightness and CIELab values, could there be any correlation?

Mike
