Hello Vic,

Other people's experience with newsprint on the list are likely to differ
from mine but it seems to me, from the little exposure I've had to coldset
web offset printing, the less ink being transferred onto the paper, the
better the reproduction. If that is the case, using a GCR separation
strategy makes sense.
I was on such a press today, calibrated to ISO newspaper26 v4, following up
on a recent custom press profiling effort, (couldn't get the exact 26% TVI
on all four colors), it was a riot to get the color looking close to the
proof. On one side of the sheet, as I remember, we cranked the yellow ink
fountain all the way up, yet the printed sheet was still missing a ton of
yellow to match the proof. I suspect the design of this particular web news
press, and those of a large number of such presses still in operation in
North America, are limited in the amount of ink they can actually transfer
onto the printing substrate (limited form rollers, no ductor roll, etc.).
So, instead of being able to print full page color photos, maybe those
presses can only print smaller color photos which don't require as much ink
to reproduce?
My two cents,
Roger
