Hi Vic,
What I find interesting is how controversial GCR still is in many
quarters. The fear of it reminds me of the water-fluoridation scares
of my childhood, or the stories I heard of the still-fresh battles
over the polio vaccines. It's hard to mount a good argument against
GCR, actually, unless one objects to using less ink and having better
and more stable gray balance. On the other hand, if your press crew
is the type that can't be bothered with a densitometer and sees black
density as a "creative" tool you're going to have trouble. But with a
crew like that one likely has plenty of trouble already. The fact is
that many people are already unknowingly using GCR--it's built into
most newer press profiles, including, as I recall, the previous one
from NAA.

Subject: New SNAP Standard (GCR instead of UCR)?

I've just been handed a spec sheet for a job that will be printed on
newsprint (it's an advertorial for our automotive client). On the spec
sheet it specifies using GCR (as opposed to UCR). Apparently this is
the new SNAP standard (new standard was established this month, August
2009 based on spec sheet I was given). This is the same standard
specified by the NAA (Newspaper Association of America).
I'm curious as to why the newspaper industry would switch to GCR.
Better presses? Better stock?
Would love to get people's comments on this, especially to those
who've
already used and printed using the new standard.
Thank you,
Vic Paredes
