I'd just like to sound a cautionary note on using a profile built with UCR
by any of the current profile generation apps. (I've discussed this topic
at length in earlier missives). If you were to look at the neutral axis
inkings of such a profile, you'd typically see a short black which rises
precipitously in the 3/4 tones to shadows, often accompanied by reversals
of the CMY inks to compensate for this rapid rise. Steep ink gradients and
ink reversals in the shadows should be avoided; they adversely affect image
quality in the shadows. Yet this is what UCR induces. Better to avoid UCR
and customize your K-generation strategy with the available control
parameters: black start, max black, TAC, GCR and Black Width. You're more
likely to get a well-behaved profile.
