I'm always surprised by people who spend thousands on their cameras, more
thousands on their lenses, and then skimp on their monitors.
The rule-of-thumb when buying hi-fi systems (years ago) was to spend 1/3rd
on the record deck, 1/3rd on the amplifier, and 1/3rd on the speakers
(giving a balanced system), yet people often spent a fortune on record decks
and amplifiers and then ruined all that lovely sound by economising on the
speakers!
It seems to me that this applies equally to monitors. You get what you pay
for, and you should aim to spend as much on your monitor as you do on your
camera, otherwise you won't be able to see what the camera recorded, just a
distorted version of it (as with the cheap speakers).

I thought most people on this forum were looking for 'professional'
solutions to 'professional' problems.
I come here to see what experts who make a living from this trade have to
say. In this scenario it is all
about ROI and the bottom line is being able to guarantee that what you see
is what you always get. I
would have thought that the extra cost of a 'profesional' monitor and
calibration instrument would soon
be recovered by the cost benefits of predicatble and consistent quality.
The most obviouos trend to me
is that Apple has a more consumer oriented focus these days. Hence its
production lines are geared
more towards the mass market where the profit margin is greater rather
than the 'niche' market of
industrial strength softproofing.
