Problem printing from OSX 10.5 to Epson R1800

I recently worked with a photographer who is having a hard time figuring out why his prints from Mac OS 10.5 to his Epson R1800 are coming out horribly dark so I was hoping someone here had some insight that could help us solve the problem.

Here's what's going on: After checking all the usual suspects, (display 'reasonably' calibrated & profiled, Using the proper settings in PS and in the print driver) we were getting prints that looked in photographic terms around 3 stops too dark. I then tried to print a profiling target, but again got the horribly dark results, any patch that was even a medium shade was coming out nearly black.

A few phone calls later I got the target to print fine by assigning sRGB to the target and then using sRGB as the printer profile in PS CS4's print dialogue essentially trying for a Null Transform. (Thanks Eric Magnusson) This worked for the target. But after making the profile and printing a new test image we still got the very, very dark results.

I also tested the printer by printing from my own laptop (also running PS CS4 and OS 10.5). Same results. Since we were able to get a decent target to print by fooling the system with a Null Transform it did not seem like a mechanical problem with the printer. And in using my own laptop we hoped to confirm there was no corruption with the printer driver (we did download and use the latest from Epson.)

It seems that somehow there is a double transform taking place, so we tried converting the image to the new profile and then again using that same profile in the PS CS4 print dialogue (hoping to do another Null Transform.) But there was little if any improvement.

Has anyone run into this? And if so have you found a solution?

Thanks!
