If you mean that there are slight color differences when you convert from
the old SWOP profile (I'm assuming Adobe's US Web CoatedSWOP v2) to profiles
created using the new SWOP data, that is to be expected. The old SWOP data
was taken from a press run somewhere in Pennsylvania in 1994, on a sheet-fed
press made to mimic a Web press, on the Text-Web stock ( a #5 paper that is
not made any more), using film and analog plates. That there are differences
in color should not be surprising. Converting to Profile using Relative
Colorimetric, Photoshop will attempt to reproduce that old color space as
best it can, but there will be differences. There is no "perfect"
conversion. As far as profiling software is concerned, they each handle the
variables (GCR, black generation, clean colors) slightly differently, which
can account for slight color shifts between them. Experienced separators
will often combine different profiles to optimize GCR and black generation
for one image. In that sense, there is no such thing as a "perfect" profile.

Subject: SWOP C3 and C5 Profiles?
Hello All
I've made several SWOP C3 and C5 profiles using Profile Maker, Monaco and
the EFI system on their rip from the data sets provided on the IDEAlliance
website. I've seen slight color differences in each profile when converting
from old SWOP to the new Specs. What I'm asking is, has anyone created a
SWOP C3 or C5 profile that they feel does a perfect job of converting
color.
I have art directors who are super sensitive to color changes.
Please send me any recommendations or profiles.
Thanks
Jim Mitchell*
