Re: Dot Simulation

We're in the process of evaluating Inkjet/RIP bundles for SWOP proofing. I've noticed that SWOP's Hard Copy Certifications page list systems that do not have the option of dot simulation. How important is dot simulation to being A) SWOP certified and B) to simulating the press (specifically when submitting editorials to places like Hearst, RR Donnelley, Quad, etc).
Thanks in advance

IMO, there really isn't much value in dot proofing. Detection of moiré is limited in accuracy, files are larger, and color is usually slightly less accurate than with contone proofs. There is benefit for some scenarios, such as a "rip-once-output-many" workflow or a flexo installation, but on the whole a contone proof will be aceptable. Morevover, submitting dot proofs to printers is kind of moot unless your providing them with screened files as they could be using different screening/angles/etc. Most inkjet devices used for proofing aren't capable to generating a dot proof for stochastic screening.

Mike
