Hi Ray.
That is true, but contone proofs do not attempt to produce a
*spectral* match. If done correctly, they do produce a very close
*metameric* match to the press output (under precisely-defined
viewing conditions, usually D50).
Further, since a contone inkjet is not concerned with maintaining the
integrity of the dot, color management can be applied to more
precisely emulate the final print conditions, including wet trapping
characteristics, which are not (always) emulated ideally on a halftone
laminate proofer. On the flip side, color management applied to a
laminate proofer comes at the expense of compromised dot integrity
with contamination of colors.
That said, its still hard to convince some to give up the dot on proofs.
