Hi Roger.
Sure, dot size may end up being slightly modified to compensate for dot
gain, but the line screen frequency, dot shape and screen angles should all
remain the same. Since moiré is caused by a contrast of *frequencies*, not
so much dot size by itself, the proof should still offer a preview of any
such possible artifacts, even if the dot size should eventually vary
slightly.

That is understandable and reasonable. Fabric patterns with moiré patterns
are an ugly sight that no one wants to have or pay for, and in that case one
*must* insist on dot proofs.
But for the large majority of the rest of us (those not in the garment
industries, or not taking pictures of speaker grilles or other fine
repeating patterns) an insistence on dot proofs is often misplaced,
specially in the early phases of production, where contone proofs are more
than sufficient.

If their insistence is on principle, and not based on the specifics of the
image's content, I tend to see it as pedantic and obstinate, and far from
fully warranted.
