My opinion is that dot simulation is really kind of silly. The only point to
it is to predict moiré patterns, but most simulations cannot do this. Most
imagesetters, or, now, platesetters, use very high dpi (2400 to 6000 dpi to
form dots from multiple tiny dots. They use different screen patterns -
elliptical, diamond, round, stochastic, etc. If you are preparing ads for
publication, there is almost no way to know which device is used for the
plate output, so any dot simulation is only good for fooling yourself. In
addition, most inkjet printers do not have high enough dpi to simulate dot
functions, and the dots also bleed out on paper, which has the benefit of
making them look more continuous tone, but it makes it worse for dot
simulation - you need a hard dot, not a bleeding one.
The only device I know of that allows true dot simulation is the Creo (now
Kodak) platesetter, which uses the same mechanical device and lasers to
create the proof and the plates. If one makes corrections for dot gain, this
can be quite effective, but in only predicts the outcome of that device.
Use proofing for color only, and all you can do is pray that you do not get
moirés Any moirés are due to the device being used to create the plates. You
could of course, make your own plates, and then proof them on a press, but
then you are opening a whole new bag of eels.

Hello List,
Happy New Year to all.
We're in the process of evaluating Inkjet/RIP bundles for SWOP
proofing. I've noticed that SWOP's Hard Copy Certifications page list
systems that do not have the option of dot simulation. How important
is dot simulation to being A) SWOP certified and B) to simulating the
press (specifically when submitting editorials to places like Hearst,
RR Donnelley, Quad, etc).
Thanks in advance.
Vanita Cyril
