I have been on the Heidelberg PrintReady system for several (5+) years
now
(coming from a long history with Rampage).
The Heidelberg system is wonderful.
Our shop does not use the entire system to anywhere close to its
potential (.ie - not JDF based workflow)
Being the prepress supervisor, I am only somewhat involved with the
estimating and job ticket creation aspects.
But from the file prep and workflow side, I have good experience.
The pre-RIP workflow is quite versatile and trapping (manual and
automatic) is quite robust.
The Signa imposition software is probably the worlds sweetest, at this
time.
My RIP is running the Adobe PDF Print Engine with no issues what so
ever.
We we calibrate our Pressroom and PrePress system regularly
and are quite happy with our HP 5500 (we currently are ready for an
Inkjet Proofer upgrade.
We try to run a gray-balanced workflow.
We are running "ImageControl" to our SM52-5 color/coater.
We did not find it that expensive to purchase and implement.
With our shorter run shop - we do not use the system as heavily as
long run shops would.

If you would care to trade some prepress color and pressroom color
expertise
with a chance to get your hands on the PrintReady workflow
I would certainly enjoy to hear from you.
We are a small shop in Portland, OR.

Keep in mind that ImageControl isn't cheap. Only printers with deep
pockets
can afford such offerings.
I, personally, have yet to complete a full calibration and profiling
cycle
on this very piece of equipment. But I can tell from my humble
experience
with HDM products that they are very, very well thought of. There is
a level
of integration in their products that no other "printing" company in
the
world can match -- from prepress workflows, to ICC profiling, to
process
calibration (including gray balance), to plate making, to presses,
binding
and finishing equipment. I think the only thing HDM doesn't offer is
paper.
But otherwise, it's a complete offering. Anyone walking in the door
of this
company can literally find everything under one roof.

I have just been looking at the workflow on the Heidelberg site, and
am mightily impressed. Even if the robot voice over can't actually
say
Heidelberg (how did that get through!). Seriously the explanatory
videos are great and should be required viewing for all printshop
owner and print room operators.

I was wondering if anyone has personal experience of this system and
whether it does indeed live up to it's claims. If it does it looks
like anyone with a sheet fed Heidelberg has got colour management
sorted!
