Well, I notice a discrepancy between my eyes too (it seems to vary from one instance to the next, probably having to do with transient factors).
But we have a visual *system*, which includes both eyes, the nerves and the brain. Somehow (and I'm sure that the physiology is very complex) we end up discounting the illuminant and optimizing the scene's luminance -- again, within reasonable limits.
But if we are afflicted with serious impairments of our visual system (from cataracts to forms of color blindness, etc.), then the system can obviously no longer compensate for those disruptions.
