Dan,
The more I read about color vision the more I realize that the cortical
processes involved are, well, complex. Land propose a theory called Retinex,
in the 30's or 40's I think. Then, there is the theory of gray world, that
everything sums up to gray, could be along the lines of the 75L10z15b you
suggest. There are a few other theories I forget about but they are far from
plain D50 and common instrumentation. I agree with your idea that we may
never understand how human "calibrate" fully. It seems the visual system
constantly adapts locally to render in our brain what seems like a very
simple and consistent world -- life would be chaos otherwise and we, as a
specy, wouldn't have evolved this far.
Profiling, in my view, is still in its infancy as there are too many
physical and perceptual effects that are not taken into consideration. But
give research a few more years and, with a little hope, the scale could tip
in our favour. There is no turning back from increasing automation in
everything color-managed, and that driving force is going to make
interesting things happen. Upcoming inkjet presses, among other
technological trends, IMO, will bring more discipline (hopefully?) and more
science to the process of reproduction. Heck, the integration of on-board
instruments into the latest LFPs is pushing the idea of "close-loop" color
at the proofing level. So, science and technology are constantly
progressing, hopefully for the better.
I hear that the color science community is getting ready to embrace
physiologically-based color difference metrics, a sure sign of times. I
think we'll see more and more higher levels of vision come into the
reproduction equation too.
I read (or heard?) recently that 80% of our brain neurons are involved in
vision: that's a staggering number.
Thank's for your stimulating reply and contribution to this thread / Roger
