I spoke of theory, but the very same Perceptual RI behavior I describe I
have also seen in my professional imaging work numerous times, in actual
practice.
So, it's hardly just "fine theory". The theory I mentioned only puts the
process in a more formal light.

"Logically possible"? Sorry, but I lose you there. So if something works in
a way that is described as it is in my paragraph, one should discard it
because it is not "logically possible"?

I think you're being a bit disingenuous here, Graeme. The Perceptual
conversion *procedure* first maps source black to PCS black, then PCS black
to destination black. While strictly speaking the two profiles never "see"
each other directly, the *procedure* certainly knows how to go about it.
