results from his profiles...and a happy happenstance.
A useful fudge for a situation in which the source profile
isn't really known at profile creation time, is to set
the perceptual source gamut to be the opposite type of
device to the device in question, and then choose between
perceptual and relative colorimetric according to
the source device type at link time.
To be more specific:
Say you're creating a profile for a CMYK device, then you
would set the perceptual source gamut used for gamut mapping to
(say) sRGB. If linking the profile with an RGB source profile,
use perceptual, and you will at least get a gamut mapping that
is shaped appropriately for transforming from an RGB like to CMYK
space. If linking with a CMYK source profile, choose relative colorimetric,
and at least then you're doing a direct mapping between gamuts that
are similarly shaped. BPC would probably assist in both of these situations.
The opposite tack would be taken for a RGB like device profile (ie.
set source gamut to CMYK, link using perceptual to a CMYK type
source and relative colorimetric for an RGB source.)
Maybe the default gamut mappings that some of the profile
making packages take a similar tack.
Of course when the whole thing is a closed system (all the source
and destination profiles were created by the same package and it uses
a PRMG type approach), or the V4 style PRMG is being used as a PCS
intermediate gamut, then maybe it will all work acceptably well together
as well.
