OK, so at the risk of appearing an idiot (but A: Uh, I am, and B: once
again, I've been drinking)
Years ago Chris Murphy told me an interesting tidbit. Normally, (except for
a VERY old version of Candella - where it asked what your source space
profile was....before building an output printer profile), when a normal
profiling application makes an output profile......it never asks you what
your source space is.
Never.
So when it computes the perceptual gamut compression.....uh....well, it
guesses...or assumes a source space to map from.
An assumption which may....or may not, be correct.
So. Gamut compression in perceptual is PRE-CALCULATED...in the ouput
profile.....at the time of output profile creation. From an ASSUMED
source...which might correct....or might not....but we can't choose.
Thus: Graeme is correct. Again.
Completely.
However, that doesn't negate the fact that Marco may have gotten great
results from his profiles...and a happy happenstance.
How's that for a political answer?!
AND, if you all agree with this position....then, I take full credit.
Otherwise....Chris Murphy is an idiot.
