Hi Marco/ Chris
I realise that the ACD are dumbed down displays and do not have the
hardware to be considered candidates for certified softproofing.
Truthfully, even if they did pass certification the ambient conditions
are far from ideal, general office, windows...
However, this is a real world (pun intended Chris!) scenario, the
colour judgments being carried out are not life threatening, aiming at
pleasing colour through out the magazine and an assessment of the
final PDF through Dalim's Dialogue. The set up has performed very well
up to date. I have not experienced uniformity issues at all with the
20" displays, but some with the 23", there are no 30" displays in use.
I do find them to be consistent down to the .3./.4dE level, especially
now we have be able to turn off all the keyboard and on display
brightness buttons and disabled universal access functions.
But in order to comply with possible future legislation soft proofs
will have to be signed off from a certified display. Hence the
suggestion that on each art team one of the Apple displays will be
replaced with a conforming display. The comment about the lack of a
possible Apple solution was a bit tongue in cheek, as this client,
along with many others I suspect, now find themselves with no
inventory of replacement displays for the huge arsenal of legacy Apple
hardware, a situation I find quite incredible!
Very briefly the UDACT certification covers grey balance, profile
quality and gamut volume.
It utilises 21 patches for grey balance, 35 patches for profile
quality and 48 patches taken from the Ugra/FOGRA media wedge. there is
also an optional uniformity check based on ISO12646.
After analysis the display will be passed for certified soft proofing
for ISOCoated/Gravure, ISOUncoated, ISONewspaer, or relegated to
layout only.
Pass criteria are
Grey Balance max 1dC average
max 2dC range
Profile Quality max 3dE average
max 6dE peak
Gamut (MK) max 4dE average
Every display must have at least 90% of ISOCoated gamut volume.
regards Eric
