That's one of the many reasons we recently replaced our onyx RIP with EFI's. I can say the banding issue is non-existent with the Fiery RIP. (So, it's not the designjet)
I worked with onyx on this issue for a few months, sending them my media profiles, digital files, and printouts that showed the problem, and they wound up telling me they couldn't fix it, and escalated it to their software engineers. They weren't able to print images without reproducing the error.
