I was reading the post about EFI Color Manager and it touched on some
points related to the HP Z series printers.
The halftone driver for the Z31/3200
actually drives the printer as a 7-color device and requires a
CMYKRGB profile. It's very, very hard to write HT drivers for CMYK+N
printers, by the way, and most proofing RIPs still use contone
drivers for these.

I have had no luck using Onyx Production House v7.1 or .2 or .3 and
the Halftone mode with our 2 HP Z6100ps printers. Perhaps someone can
shed some light on this for me. Contacting both Onyx and HP has been
worthless and pointless.
I go through all the steps of restricting ink first for my given
media, then linearize, then set an ink limit, if needed, then build
the ICC profile. When I print a test image, such as the Onyx quality
image it all looks fine. Colors are better then the built-in HP RIP
(Contone RGB with overly restricted ink limits and little control),
contrast is good saturation is good.
Where it always fails for me, with any media, is when I try to print
a solid color such as Pantone 2767, a dark navy, I get banding. This
happens with other similar dark navies, some dark purples and also
with some black builds. All media settings match up on RIP and
printer. Different pass modes simply alter the distance between the
banding.
The print heads all seem to be working okay, my printer test pages
tell me that, plus I can use the internal HP RIP with any of my third
party medias and everything prints fine, no banding. It only fails,
on two different printers, when I try to use Onyx and the Halftone mode.
What am I missing? Anyone else having problems?
Thank you,
David Wollmann
