Hi Chris,

Yes, we requested the tag so we could enable real workflows with
devicelink profiles.
Great, and we are deeply grateful for that and use it in our workflow
software. The queues in basICColor gHOST can be configured with one
click, based on the information stored in the psid tag and displays
awarning, if the output profile is not present on the system. When
documents are being converted in gHOST, the destination profile (if
present on the computer) gets tagged to the document.
But, when we wrote our devicelink code, almost nobody was using the
tag.
PLEASE, not again! We´ve been there, nothing has changed since then.
Please come back when you´ve fixed this issue and don´t try to blame
others for Photoshop flaws. We write the psid tag into our DeviceLinks
since shortly after the tag has been published.
And when we tested the devicelink profile that did use the tag, a
large percentage of them had problems.
If our DeviceLinks have problems, please let me know specifically,
which!
Rather than introduce problems into workflows, we opted to leave
support for that tag off until we could get some vendors to clean up
their usage. (and hoped that making devicelink usage more
accessible would increase their usage and encourage the profile
makers to clean things up).
If the tag is missing in a devicelink profile, you can still fall back
on your strategy of ignoring it, but there is no reason for ignoring
it, if it´s present. If you would want to be really user-friendly you
could even display a warning, if the tag is missing or not compliant
with the defined standard and tell the user to assign the output
profile manually.
When the issues are resolved at the profile creation side, we'll
enable the destination profile.
If you wait until all the problems at the profile creation side are
squared away, you´re safe! You will never have to implement support
for the psid tag ;-)
DeviceLink support is still an advanced/expert feature - and we do
tend to assume that people who need to use them actually know what
they're doing.
Some people on this list are living proof, that this is not 100%
correct ;-)
Please, check your aim before throwing stones.
Done that!
And, btw, I´m not throwing stones, I just comment at flaws – not
saying that I´m flawless, or our products are. I welcome any
justifiable critique and try to rectify whatever is wrong. And that´s
what I´d expect from others as well – asking too much?
Karl
