Roger,
My take on the balance option in PM:
By default, ProfileMaker targets the lowest L* value as the target
black point. This would be advantageous if you are seeking a profile
that delivers the "blackestblack", and are willing to forgive some
measurable cast that you probably can't see anyways. By clicking
"neutralize black", you are trading in "blackestblack" for
"blackestneutralblack" (which would be a bit lighter, but should
measure more neutral).
Tough to say how well that really works. And... I can't say for sure
that this description exactly fits the actual behavior. Still.... I
feel like I gave this description to somebody a long time ago in a
galaxy far far away, when I knew all about this stuff.
; )
In PM, if you really want the "BlackestBlack", you should enable the
"Use MonacoProfiler" flag. I know I'm going to catch some trouble for
that... but your results will speak for themselves.

Steve,
I'll admit I never knew what that "balance" button is all about. If
it's
doing anything good, why wouldn't it be on all the time? Are there
instances
where we wouldn't want it on?
Best / Roger
