One idea that has just come to mind...
The system-level gamma in Snow Leopard has reportedly been changed to 2.2 from 1.8.
I'm not sure how this fits into the problems but a "1.8" target printing on a "2.2" system would probably print "slightly lighter".
So that might be playing a role.
