Thank you all for the responses, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Being a bit of an optimist, simply sticking with Leopard/CS3 isn't what I really want to do, but I do appreciate the suggestion would solve my immediate issue, however, after 20 years of using a Mac and Photoshop to earn a good living, I don't feel that standing still now is the only answer, that's why I came to the list to find if there was another option available, partly because I was struggling to find a clear indication elsewhere, there's an awful lot of useless misguided info posted in some forums and precious little info on the manufacturers sites about this issue.
Now at least I have something positive to try. If a fresh install of SL & CS4 and Epson driver works I owe a special thanks to Andrew Rodney and Mark Radogna. If it doesn't work, at least I've cleared out some legacy files and probably regained some space.

extensions, print drivers, etc) are producing these issues"
This is why I did originally post as much info as I could, so hopefully others could compare and maybe a solution would come to light. The post from Dana Rasmussen points to a different Epson Driver, 6.11 as opposed to 6.57 maybe that could have been an option.
Thank you all again for the replies, I'll be busy with a fresh install for a while now.
