White Backer Lab Values
White Backer Lab Values

Greetings,
Up to now I have only been measuring targets on semi gloss stock (I am a label printer). My upcoming project is to
measure a target on clear material that will have a white behind the target.
I use a white ceramic tile behind the semi gloss with I measure. Its Lab values are 92.26; -0.18; 2.0. By test measuring
over other backgrounds, I am sure the combo of the liner and the stock keeps what I am measuring over out of the picture
when measuring my semi gloss stock.
I know this will not be the same for the clear material with one bump of white.
So:
1. Is there a set of standard Lab values a white backer needs to meet. I read in the G7 How To that a value of 98,0,0 is
listed for the white backer.
2. I measured and compared the white on my iO table, the calib patch on my iO, the white slate for the iOne, the calib spot
for my 528 and the white tile I use. Needless to say they are all different. In terms of dE differences they range from 1.34 to
3.31 - ugh!!!
3. What's a guy to do?
I am thinking that since I measure on the iO, if I had some of the same white that is on it to use a press, I would be better
off. I do not have the luxury of the iO during the press run and have chosen to use a 528 for three reasons; easy to
transport; matches what is used in our press environment; and can be used to dump data into a spread sheet which makes
averaging set up readings very easy.
Blind luck has the iO table to white tile dE at 1.6 - good enough (?)
Anyone know if one can buy a piece of the material on the iO table, and, does anyone know what is the best way to clean
the white backer on the iO table?
Thanks
-Bill-
