I have, and routinely use, a 9600, its still a very good machine.
You should be using the Bill Atkinson profiles for the 7600/9600.
Atkinson went to great effort to create a linear output for the
76/9600 series printer. While an excellent output device, it had not
been linearize by the factory. The problem areas were the transitions
between the various light and dark ink cartridges. After the
76/9600-Atkinson experience, Epson realized that their printers must
be linearized first (by the factory) before an effective profile could
be made. Atkinson's profile are superior to any profiling package
because he iterated the full 33-step ICC protocol, using the
GretagMacbeth PMP engine, and over and over until the CMYK curves were
completely smooth; I believe he hand profile it over 20 times.
The Atkinson profiles are available as a download from the Epson
website that supports the printers. Top of the page

.
If these profiles give you the same basic results, you probably have a
monitor issue.
