I am myself curious of how the lightness of a print can be determined.
Since you are talking F-Stops, I bet you are looking into that from a
photographer's point of vue? I did much proofing for press printed
material and I always found that straight prints made even from a custom
made printer profile were too dense compared to a pleasing image on
screen (the transparency effect?). Printed in CMYK, the image would have
been too dark too. However, the same lightness suited very well prints
destined to be framed and displayed with a spotlight on. But displayed
in a non illuminated place, they would appear dark. So I think this is a
fairly relative issue. I bet the only way of determining wether a print
is faithful to the actual file is to print a tone or color scale and
then measure the patches with a densitometer. But I often found that the
gama curve had to be adapted to the print viewing conditions and also to
the context of other images. Just my two cents...
