To add to what Don Hutcheson wrote earlier, it's my impression that ColorSync has progressed very little over the last decade. All the progress in color management has been made by applications from companies other than Apple (Photoshop, etc.), whereas the basic architecture of ColorSync within the Mac OS seems to have remained fairly stagnant.
Yes, now we have v4 profiles, but that was an innovation advocated and brought forth by the ICC, not specifically by Apple.
What I would appreciate the most would be things like the adoption of "smart CMMs", or the implementation of some form of color appearance models (CAMs) within the core ColorSync architecture.
This latter innovation would elevate color management as currently performed on the Mac above the realm of the purely colorimetric by accounting to some extent for "environmental" elements such as the color appearance phenomena listed in Chapter 6 of Mark Fairchild's "Color Appearance Models" (John Wiley & Sons, 2005) -- things like simultaneous contrast, hue changes due to changes in luminance, and other mechanisms that affect the way we perceive color within a viewing ENVIRONMENT (whereas the purely colorimetric model which dominates ICC CM considers colors IN ISOLATION from what what surrounds them).
An attempt to introduce CIECAM elements into computer-based color management systems was made with the now defunct Vista OS. I was stunned at the time that Windows would be taking a step in that direction while Apple appeared to be doing nothing of the sort.
In brief, I think it's high time that Apple renewed the kind of commitment that it made by launching ColorSync so many years ago, and that it pleasantly surprised us by setting a new high standard for the whole industry, as it did then.
If things don't evolve and Apple treats ColorSync as something that needs no special attention or is fine as is, we professional users of ICC CM will slowly feel abandoned and somewhat betrayed in our legitimate hopes and expectations.
