Okay, so being the "fly on the wall" or the "kid in the corner" listening to all this here is what I have surmized.
Adobe was all set to make a 64 bit version of PhotoShop for Mac OS X and Windows. They chose one of the languages (Coco or Carobon) to write early versions in because of cross platform "efficiencies" for lack of a better term. At some point made the switch from Coco to Carbon (or from Carbon to Coco) and that left Adobe in a bit of a spot. They would have needed more time to rewrite/translate PhotoShop into the new Carbon/Coco environment. Which is why Windows has a 64 bit version and we are still waiting?
Meanwhile Apple has had the better part of a decade to keep moving along with ColorSync and Quartz. Quartz is what handles all the graphics and ColorSync is called by Quartz to perform a number of functions. If I recall correctly, and I think Nathan just confirmed this off-list, was that parts of the color management for printing targets are forced to go through ColorSync whether we want them to or not. And as things have evolved with Mac OS X parts of ColorSync have been updated and others not so much. With the move to 10.6 there was a lof of re-writing going on and parts of ColorSync have been updated and others not. Whether they have been updated or not there seems to bee some serious "flaws" or outright broken functionality in ColorSync and 10.6.x, specificall 10.6.3. And we really can't have anything replace ColorSync, third party tool like Little CMS, because Quartz and ColorSync are tied to each other.
To bypass some of these "maintenance" issues with ColorSyn some developers/users have done things on their own like Chromix with LittleCMS to keep things working "normally" (not sure if that's the right word). Maybe this explains why when using different tools on Mac and Windows to convert colors in a PDF I get different results. But that has been somewhat solved by people using Little CMS or the Adobe CMM to get consistent results platform to platform but also OS version to OS version.
So for purposes of printing color targets and getting measurment data, printing in general, things are still pretty screwed up and some sort of undesired conversion takes place causing problems.
Am I anywhere near having an idea what I'm talking about? Somehow I need to be able to relate this to my clients, some of who would not have any clue but would understand there is a significance to it.
Thank you in advance!
