I've done more tests, and that is true, but only if you save in Word
12.2.3's "docx" format AND if you save as PDF from the "Format" pulldown
menu inside Word's own "Save As" dialog box (both of those are crucial
details that no one had seen fit to specify so far).
If you save the Word file in the older "doc" format (Word 97-2004), all the
profile information is lost.
We should not forget details like those if this exchange is to share helpful
information.

Yes. The on-screen appearance is off.

Again, only if you do that from Word's own "Save As" dialog box starting
from Word's "docx" format.

That sounds right. But on the other hand your clients will probably notice
that things don't look like they do inside Word.

Yes, but only if your printer uses an RGB workflow.
My tests show that RGB profiles are being preserved, but CMYK profiles are
lost, and the file is converted to "Calibrated RGB" instead, and ends up
looking nothing like the original CMYK image.
