it might have over their patents, and re-joined when they convinced themselves

to do with implementing ICC compatible color management though.
For example, the monumental innovations in color management that were
supposed to rock the world with the introduction of Vista (yes, remember
Vista...?) appear to have fizzled spectacularly.
It seems that Microsoft delivered an innovative color management system
that has backwards compatibility with ICC. It's success beyond that
depends on the enthusiasm of others. If other people are currently content
with ICC, and cross system compatibility is important (and it mostly is),
then it's not a great surprise that it hasn't set the world on fire yet,
and may never do so. At least they had a go at it.
