Alexandrite and some synthetic (cubic zirconia or YAG + dopant) stones show
striking color changes with different illuminants.
Alexandrite has an additional problem with crystal orientation and
polarization - making it a bit difficult to use for reliable demonstrations.
(rotating the crystal changes the color, and viewing different polarization
orientations can also change the color)
Even neodymium doped YAG shows a change from pink to pale blue under
fluorescent vs. daylight illuminants.
Yes, I have samples of alexandrite, Nd-YAG, plus several other "color
change" crystals. (some for gems, some for lasers, and some for play)
