Given that the term "Color Constancy" seems to have two distinct meanings
in the world of color, I'm not sure that using the term "Color Inconstancy"
to refer to cases of metameric failure helps clarify things very much.
[ "Color Constancy" seems to be used in the color and vision
literature for two distinct phenomena: one is the robustness
of a color under different illuminants - something that is strongly related
to metamerism, and the other is the human visual systems ability to
estimate and "see" the underlying color of things, discounting the
illumination conditions. I note FWIW, that the Wikipedia entry refers to
the latter, and this is the meaning assumed at conferences such as CIC.
There may be a slight bias towards using "Color inconstancy" for the
former, and "Color constancy" for the latter, but having one not be
the inverse of the other seems very confusing.]
I think that the attempts to correct the popular usage of the term
"Metamerism" are warranted though, given that its meanings is
often being inverted.
Graeme Gill.
