I think Ernst, here, has made a very important point.
If you take a single neutral B&W print, it in fact has lots of "samples".
Take dark gray sample and a light gray sample -- 2 samples. With the
first illuminant both samples are neutral gray i.e. they have the same
hue but just different brightnesses. Now view this print under a different
illuminant the dark gray sample shifts one way in hue whereas the light
gray sample shifts a different way in hue.
Two samples: illuminant 1 yields a match in hue whereas illuminant 2
yields a mismatch in hue.
Is this not the definition of metameric failure:
"Metamerism always describes the color relationship between a pair of samples"
