And yet, they are not raw files. They are simply rendered images
saved in a DNG format. No advantages here in terms of saving them as
high bit TIFFs and treating them the save in ACR.

In the first message I used "Raw" as I'm aware of that difference.
Basically that goes back to the hardware; linear RGB CCD's that do the
scanning so each pixel is really RGB sampled and there's no need to
demosaic like needed with a Bayer camera sensor. It's as "Raw" as the
scanner can deliver. So you will also get a negative image from a color
or B&W print film.
The DNG format output, also possible, is a flattering disguise. There
could be one advantage though but I have not checked that, 16 bit TIFF's
compressed can be larger than uncompressed 16 bit TIFF's. Maybe DNG
gives better compression on 16 bit.
PNG for example compresses 16 bit data better than TIFF.
As I understand it DNG files made of Sigma Fovean Raw files are linear
DNG files and are probably more like what Vuescan delivers.
Maybe we can not call Sigma's X3F output Raw either.
