InDesign color management problem

I¹m very used to color management in Photoshop but am new to Indesign and am
having a problem.
When I place an image (jpeg or tiff) in an ID file it does not display
accurately, ie the way the same digital file displays in PS on the same
monitor. In ID the image is too dark and saturated. When I output a pdf
file, the image displays exactly as the ID preview does, in other words
incorrectly. I assumed that ID would display the image as does PS assuming I
don¹t tell it to ignore profiles or some other odd thing.
To keep it simple, I¹ve set my ID working space to srgb. My digital file is
a tiff or jpeg in srgb with an embedded profile. I can simply create a new
one page file, place the image there and it displays incorrectly. The
Overprint Preview is not on and I¹ve set the transparency blend space to rgb
(others have suggested to look at these things).
My intention is to stay in an RGB world, to create PDF files for display on
monitors. I need the images I place in the indd file to display as they do
in PS.
I running PS and ID CS4 on Mac OS 10.4.11. For various reasons I cannot
upgrade the OS or apps on this machine but it obviously should work in this
environment.
Any suggestions?
Bob Cornelis
