You know it's funny.... this is exactly how MonacoEZcolor worked.
Print your ICC target on the media of your choice, tape your
(included) IT8.7 5x7 reflective reference to the printed chart. Scan
the whole thing. MonacoEZcolor would simultaneously construct a
scanner profile (using the iT8), and then use that profile to
determine the Lab of the scanned printer patches. The Lab values would
get matched up with the original printer chart device values and
Shazam! MonacoEZcolor would spit out a very nice profile. All in one
click. X-Rite still owns that tech. It was pretty nifty product in
it's day.
