Tony,
Good to see you. Imagine complete color management freedom from instruments,
calibration and profiling parameters? You could be putting all that aside
and go for a monitor that allows you to dynamically reconfigure itself to
suit your every needs, gamma, white points, primaries, black points -- the
works. Sounds too good to be true? Head over to NEC and hunt for the PA
series, equipped with Multiprofiler. Don't know if you have been following
the threads lately but, I'll admit my shameful ignorance in the value of
this display before Chris Murphy mentioned its unique hardware design. I
think you may find all you need under this "one stop shopping", wide gamut,
IPS, displayport, DVI, no-need-to-replace-your-existing-video-card monitor,
and more affordable than that other brand you've put all your hard-earned
money on before. What can I say? I used to be an Eizo die-hard. Now, having
lived through CG241s and a few others, I think NECs have a technical lead
that other display manufacturers (except maybe Quatto, with all due respect,
J and Peter) will be judged against. I don't work for these guys, btw.
That's certainly the future of displays technologies. Until we got OLEDs and
who knows what crazy light emitting technologies scientists will come up
next with.
My two cents / Roger

Subject: Upgrading Display
Hi, guys - I need some advice.
I'm getting ready to upgrade my displays. Currently I'm using an Eizo
ColorEdge 210 as my main screen, with an Eizo FlexScan L568 for a pallet
monitor. The 210 is getting a bit dim and will soon be demoted to pallet
patrol, while a ___________ display will replace it. The fill-in- the-blank
problem is because much has changed since I last went shopping.
Starting out on the Eizo site my choice would probably be between the CG241W
and CG243W (I'd like to go to a larger screen, but given the times....).
When comparing the two 24x's, however, I run into VA vs.
IPS, DVI & DisplayPort, 16.77 million vs. 1.07 billion, and other terms that
are new to me. A trip to Wikipedia has brought me somewhat up to speed,
but, as a question to those who really know this stuff, what's the best way
to go?
Other questions I have... Will I need to replace my video card
(MacPro3,1/NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT) to benefit from the IPS screen? Can
DisplayPort go the distance? My setup requires about 10'-12' of display
cable. What else should I be looking at besides the Eizo? Whatever I get,
it will need a hood. I'm currently using a DTP94 and basICColor to profile.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Tony
