Hi Edmund,
As you can see, we are looking forward and we are taking cues from the outside world. Everyone needs to understand that unlike many independent developers, we have to move towards a workable specification. While it's great to have lots of comments and participation, in the end it is a long process to get to a useable specification that can become an ISO work product. The other point that needs to be understood is that we need to work with older profiles as well, so the infrastructure that an independent developer invents, may not fit well within the framework of the work we are doing. None the less, all comments are welcome. I will as Phil to look into some kind of comment board, that is visible to the world at large.
If the "probe profiles" meet the V4 spec, then they should not barf. If you have a failing example, please send it to my xrite address and I will forward it to the appropriate developer.
With respect to WCS: I cannot comment on it. I know that it will respect a V2 profile, but I am unsure of V4. It is my understanding that the Microsoft Rich Media team has been disbanded so I am no longer aware of anyone at MS working on Color Management. Neither Apple, nor MS was represented at the last meeting.
Regards,
Tom

Tom,
May I suggest -as an ICC member - that we extend the communication
process started here by opening a public comment zone specifically
relevant to .2 ? As an ICC member, I do enjoy having heard of .2, and
will now make my comments in public as I was never asked to comment in
private.
Re. the XML tools for the existing spec, I did try to use them but Max
wasn't supporting Mac OS specifically. An associate did a port for me,
but it might be a good idea to get a Mac port officially supported
and in sync.
My first experiment with the port of the XML tools demonstrated that
by construction the tools *can and will barf* on weird stuff like
probe profiles. I think an official transition of ICC profiles to a
"modern" format like XML or JSON is a wonderfully appropriate idea,
and the sooner it gets adopted the better - but we should make sure we
have the most robust and tolerant spec and reference implementation,
and test the bejeezus out the parser or else we'll end up with a new
ICC format that is interoperable with the old one only on paper.
By the way, there is still an elephant in this room, namely Windows
Color System - what is the status of that, and to what degree are
Microsoft now prepared to interact with the ICC standards process?
