Please let's not let the perfect be the enemy of the good -- especially when the perfect is impossible and the good is excellent in practice.
I really can't think of a single likely scenario where assuming the display profile results in better behavior for a Web browser, and I similarly can't think of a scenario in which assuming sRGB will make things worse. Add in that sRGB *is* the proper choice the overwhelming majority of the time and an acceptable compromise the overwhelming majority of the exceptions, and it should seem to be the obvious choice.
