Hello all,
The problem of the Mac OS (X) settings for a generic RGB colorspace
(should be sRGB IEC 61699 by default and changable by the user..) are
discussed since years at the list. Apple ignores the problems of users
and offers to solves the problems from color management professionals
since years.
A connected problem are three levels of configuration and application of
ICC-profiles
- System Level Mac OS X
- Application Level
- (Printer) Driver Level
It would be the best, if the compnay responsible for the operating
system would deliver a color management architecture, where applications
and printer drivers could "plugIn" in transparent way. This means
espacially, that developers, consultants and power users have the
possibilty to verify, if applications and drivers are interacting with
the OS concerning in a correct way. In the last step, this could lead to
certification of applications and drivers for correct interaction with
the OS.
I don´t believe that Apple is able to understand the importance of
concepts. I don´t see either that the ICC is willing to make a
recommendation for such kind of color architecture,
Being a professional Mac user since 20 year in the graphic arts, I´m now
preparing to make LINUX my preferred OS. I use Windows and Mac OS X
only, if can´t avoid it for customer projects.
Looking at ArgyllCMS, LittleCMS, the OpenICC project etc. I believe,
that Linux and OpenSoure have the potential to be the preferred OS for
color management professionals in 2 or 3 years.
By the way, sRGB is not a "Microsoft / HP standard" It is since years an
international standard IEC 61699 and also the W3C recommendation for
untagged RGB-data.

There is NIH syndrome (not invented here) at work. Apple used to have
a monitor profile with gamma 1.8, they have been forced to accept that
LCD monitor now run natively close to 2.2, it doesn't amuse them, so
they will be damned if they also accept that images which come from PC
systems are using the "Microsoft" standard sRGB. Give them another two
years or so, and they will make the change. At that point wide gamut
will be in wide use anyway :)

To satisfy Apple, I think some kind of system preference could/should be
used, as Andrew argued -- nothing wrong with that. Make it sRGB by default
and have an interface for the user to change this, if he/she so desire. I
mean, let's not build "black boxes", goodness sake but "open systems", color
democracies. If a user is convinced that proPhotoRGB is better for Safari,
well, who am I to argue what that user? As Klaus pointed out, the 3www
consortium agrees that sRGB makes the best sense to use. As long as Mr Apple
keeps hard coding these references in, I can see this discussion dragging
and re-surfacing once in a while, as it does now. But the day Apple will let
the user decide, while giving them some *meaningful* defaults, then
everybody will be better off.
Those implementors who have no clue about what standard to choose need come
to this forum for guidance and be told where to find the ICC web site
(www.color.org).
My two cents.

Implementors faced with no standard are choosing different solutions to
displaying untagged, and this is becoming problematic for both users and
web authors.
One thing one might do is bring up the issue of displaying untagged at the
ICC
having the ICC issue a white paper on the subject.
On the other hand, if Firefox or Chrome give better viewing than Safari,
maybe user choice will convince Apple implementors ...And if users prefer
the Safari solution, who are we to complain :)
