It might help if you would tell us what model computer and which OS version you're using - both for the system which gives a "murky" profile, and the one which seems to work well.
On a perhaps related note, my friend is having similarly poor results when she attempts to calibrate her Samsung monitor using i1 Display on her MacBook Pro running 10.6.4.
Is there a known issue using i1 Display on the MacBook Pro running 10.6.4?
