Karl,
It's interesting to see that your "Dmax" black can be reduced to a TAC of
160%. Because you are looking at the darkness of the CMYK combination,
could you quote the L* values of a) the paper b) the '4-colour' blacks for
the three cases you mention (TACs of 160%, 330% and 360%), please. It
would help develop a sense of scale of these combinations.
In newspapers, we are generally working with the gamut created within a
TAC of 240%. That's what we use in our IFRA newspaper profile - before the
application of any additional ink-optimisation program. Agfa found there
was no improvement in gamut size for newspapers by increasing the TAC
above 240%. This is the upper limit in TAC used in their automatic image
processing program, IntelliTune.
However, with the widespread downturn in the economy, we know of tests
done by newspapers that have reduced the TAC to 180% without a visible
deterioration in the picture quality.
(All this assumes that the inks meet the ISO 2846-2 standard for
conformity - colour, transparency and strength, which almost no printer
checks. And ISO 12647-3 for printing.)

Kamil,
you are right with your statement that with a TAC lower than 200 you
can´t print full secondary colors. With a good profiler though, you
can make profies with a total black that´s way under 200% while
leaving the secondaries alone. We´ve tested combinations of GCR and
UCR with black reading 40, 20, 0, 100 and it´s darker than 330% or
360% black! And the secondaries are just perfect.
Best regards,
Karl Koch
