....
Within X-rite, I was one of the strongest supporters of the M1 spec
until I
took a very close look at what it really implied and the real field
implications. Most importantly, it is important to control
expectations
from end users in the field. M1 has raised a certain expectation
level that
I fear will not be realized. I did not come to this conclusion
without a
great deal of research and measurements.
I am the other way around (as the editor of ISO 13655 and convener of
JWG8 (in charge of for ISO 13655)).
my words in the 2008 Amsterdam meeting:
...."Mr. Kraushaar raised concerns of possible irritations in the
later usage of that standard since both measurement conditions “M0”
and “M1” aiming for the same use case, which was called “colour
management by default”. Workflow applications such as the definition
of aim data, characterization data, measurements and validations for
proof or press quality control have been mentioned as possible
examples."
So we have to be very cautious in separating the "correct" measurement
and the further "digestion" or handling of that data. If we use M1 and
do "colour management by default such as conformance programme,
softproofing aims, separations ...) we will run into trouble ...
Here we simply have no simple answer (in a waterproof standardization
concept) but with the introduction of predefined breaking points there
are workflows in place that solve the problem (which is printing the
expecting by achieving a proof to print match).
