Bit late...
Having both EFI and GMG here I can confirm that the EFI is a PITA to calibrate. We proof everything from newsprint to glossy magazine covers and if you have closer to 20 different output conditions then you waste a lot of time and paper keeping the EFI calibrated. The GMG means only having to run calibrations on 4 media types -- a much quicker process and much easier to delegate too.
I also don't think that the overprints from the EFI RIP are anywhere near as good as they are on the GMG. We test a lot of duotone curves for food packaging and some of the proofs from the EFI were so bad that, at one point, we were having to print one colour, roll the paper back and then manually overprint the second colour! The result was out of register but a much less embarrassing simulation than the "EFIng" original...
