Opening and rewriting the files with Photoshop
should be only the last resort IMHO and you should make sure to preserve
vendor-specific metadata.

my advice refers to Barry's situation:
1.) TIFF files
2.) from various sources (mostly captured with scanners or camera-based
reprographic systems, many of them probably more or less "unknown",
"undefined" or made by companies that no longer exist)
It was not meant to be a "general" advice and it is not applicable to
"Camera Raw" and DNG files.
