Just to be clear that we're talking about the same thing, the screen saver I'm looking at is in the Desktop & Screen Saver system pref, under the Pictures twist down triangle, and has three modes grouped in a three position toggle button. The leftmost position is the default, and you're right, it's not working correctly on 10.6.5.
It looks like the leftmost position saver, the one that does a gradual pan and zoom in/out, does pay attention to profiles embedded in images but ignores the display profile. It behaves as though the display profile is constant, so perhaps it's always matching to Generic RGB.
The second position screen saver that does rotation and zoom out, simulating photos falling onto a surface, does match to the display profile correctly.
These both work correctly on Lion, which will be the next major release of Mac OS X.
