interesting discussion here.
I don“t know if somebody mentioned earlier, but ...
In basic, agree with David. We are not talking about some kind
of colored "slides" in layers, we are talking about offset printing.
You are totally disregarding many specific factors influencing colors
of final print. Can you imagine how important can be not only dot gain,
but trapping values, printing colors order (significant changes can
occur especially in newspaper printing) etc.?

And all this is absolutely independent on substrate color. So at the
end of the day, color of substrate will be only one of many characteristics
of target printing process.

So, IMHO, you need profile of target printing process; you can use
this profile in number of different ways afterwards.
