Thank you for the clarification, folks, now it works as hoped for. This is my workflow, and trust it is now correct, unless I missed something.
When I open the original scanner images in Photoshop, they are untagged but in Adobe RGB working space. This is where the confusion is/was.
No I open the scans and first assign the new profile and the image looks improved on screen; then I convert the image from there to my working profile (AdobeRGB) and save the file.
From there I have it straight when I go to print to different devices.
